Notes

National results were calculated using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. State specific results were calculated using the State Inpatient Databases. Both types of files are made available through the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. Results are adjusted for age and sex. N/A indicates that data were not available or suppressed because of reliability issues.

There is a break in series in 2016 because of the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes.

Definitions

Potentially preventable hospitalizations for adults. Potentially preventable hospitalizations are hospital visits that evidence suggests could have been avoided with better access to high-quality outpatient care, such as care provided in doctor's offices, clinics or other settings outside the hospital. This includes hospitalizations for the acute conditions of urinary infections, pneumonia, and dehydration and chronic conditions (diabetes, congestive heart failure, hypertension, angina, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma).
