Notes

National results were calculated using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. State specific results were calculated using the State Inpatient Databases. Both types of files are made available through the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. Total costs associated with potentially preventable hospitalizations were calculated by multiplying charges times relevant cost to charge ratios, which adjust charges to costs. Results are adjusted for age and sex. N/A indicates that data were not available or suppressed because of reliability issues.

There is a break in series in 2016 because of the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 codes.

Definitions

Per person costs of potentially preventable hospitalizations. Potentially preventable hospitalizations are hospital visits that research suggests could have been avoided with better access to high-quality outpatient care, such as care provided in doctor's offices, clinics or other settings outside the hospital.
