The margin of error (MOE) represents the uncertainty of an estimate due to sampling variability; the calculated MOE is 95%. Households' metropolitan status is determined at the public use microdata area (PUMA) level. Households are classified as metropolitan if their PUMA lies entirely inside a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) and are classified as non-metropolitan if their PUMA lies entirely outside an MSA. Households are classified as indeterminate metropolitan status (mixed) if their PUMA lies partially inside an MSA. Data for 2020 were not officially released by the U.S. Census Bureau due to pandemic-related disruptions to data collection and resulting problems with data quality. There is a break in series in 2022 by metropolitan status because the ACS began using new public-use microdata areas (PUMA) geographies based on the 2020 census. These are different than those used previously, based on the 2010 census. Metropolitan status is determined at the PUMA level, so this change in PUMAs also had impacts on the metropolitan status of addresses between 2021 and 2022.
