Notes

Households with a broadband internet subscription only include those households that pay a cell phone or internet service provider for the service. The percent of households that have access to broadband without paying for it is relatively small (approximately 3% in 2018). A broadband subscription includes a cellular data plan, cable, fiber optic, DSL, or satellite internet service. Data for 2020 were not officially released by the U.S. Census Bureau due to pandemic-related disruptions to data collection and resulting problems with data quality. There is a break in series in 2022 by metropolitan status because the ACS began using new public-use microdata areas (PUMA) geographies based on the 2020 census. These are different than those used previously, based on the 2010 census. Metropolitan status is determined at the PUMA level, so this change in PUMAs also had impacts on the metropolitan status of addresses between 2021 and 2022. More information is available from IPUMS-USA. The margin of error (MOE) represents the uncertainty of an estimate due to sampling variability; the calculated MOE is 95%.
